Calm With Horses

…rough with people.

Ex-boxer Douglas ‘Arm’ Armstrong (Cosmo Jarvis LADY MACBETH, PEAKY BLINDERS) is the faithful and violent right-hand-man to the drug-dealing Devers clan, ready to dole out beatings at the whim of his best friend, and the family’s unpredictable protégé, Dympna (Barry Keoghan DUNKIRK, AMERICAN ANIMALS).

Arm’s struggle to find his place in the world has consequences on his relationship with his ex-girlfriend Ursula (Niamh Algar THE VIRTUES, THE LAST RIGHT) as she strives to find a better life for herself and their young son Jack.

What starts off as something rather predictable ends far more emotionally than anyone could have imagined and it’s down to Jarvis’ great performance. Battle Royale With Cheese

Calm With Horses boasts an extraordinarily contained central performance from Jarvis, and a strong sense of place that brings new, real tensions to old gangland tropes. This Irish noir is an arrestingly assured debut for Rowland.

Rowland keeps the story rolling along compellingly, and though there’s some brutal violence, this is as classy a low-budget crime drama as I’ve seen for some time – bleak, harrowing, but also surprisingly tender and, once or twice, very funny. Daily Mail (UK)
