Man or beast.

An ambitious young carny with a talent for manipulating people with a few well-chosen words hooks up with a female psychiatrist who is even more dangerous than he is. When charismatic but down-on-his-luck Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper) endears himself to clairvoyant Zeena (Toni Collette) and her has-been mentalist husband Pete (David Strathairn) at a traveling carnival, he crafts a golden ticket to success, using this newly acquired knowledge to grift the wealthy elite of 1940s New York society. With the virtuous Molly (Rooney Mara) loyally by his side, Stanton plots to con a dangerous tycoon (Richard Jenkins) with the aid of a mysterious psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett) who might be his most formidable opponent yet.

Nightmare Alley is a mesmerizing film of characters haunted by memory and regret, from Stan’s nightmares of his father to the longing for the past of the socialites he cons. Chicago Reader

[Nightmare Alley] is one of [Guillermo] del Toro’s best works to date [since] Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water. Casey’s Movie Mania

Directed by Guillermo del Toro, this movie will win some more awards, since it looks so good and has such great performances. The story is powerful, too… Laramie Movie Scope

ightmare Alley is full of sweet, beautiful lies, and I believed every one of them until its absolute gut-punch of an ending, a 15-second close-up that should nab Cooper an Oscar on its own. Collider
