We opened in 1985 on Hereford Street as Alice in Videoland, a little shop determined to whet the appetites of discriminating film-lovers who were being left hungry by the limited selection at their local video chain. Screeds of cinematic wealth were going to waste, all but unavailable to the public, hidden away in the dark where only the most lucky or determined of cinephiles could reach them. Alice’s brought these films into the light, and became a place celebrating not just the rare and the unusual, but films of all kinds, from all over the world. Our collection today remains second to none, a comprehensive library where foreign films, documentaries, cult and arthouse titles are packed right alongside the best mainstream film has to offer, a library that is ever-growing thanks to the efforts of our knowledgeable staff.

Now known simply as Alice and located in the old Post Office building on Tuam Street, we still provide all the services we’ve become known for, but have been slowly expanding our reaches outward in order to become the ultimate experience for the film-lover in all of us. This began in 2012 with the installation of our first cinema, the Egyptian, finally giving us a platform to show all kinds of new and exciting films that are often passed over by the larger cinemas.

The installation of our second cinema, a luxurious Wonderland themed theatre, has brought with it a reinvention of our entire site, including an improved Egyptian theatre, a redesigned browsing experience, a brand new foyer area, and a licenced bar with an assortment of unique cinema snacks. On the rental side, we’re proud to offer new unlimited DVD monthly subscriptions, free DVD home delivery, and a new recommendations tool where we make you a personalised list of 300 films to watch. We’re also thrilled to announce exciting events like Retro Fridays and Classic Matinees that will be taking place in our theatres, as well our new Alice Social Club which brings like-minded film enthusiasts together to discuss and watch quality cinema together.

Alice is better than ever, so whether you are one of our cherished regulars or a new face looking for a place to meet your every filmic need, come on in to our incredible world where you can discover (and rediscover) the best cinema has to offer in an experience like no other.

  • review rating 5  This is one of the greens of Christchurch. One of the pieces of charm that has survived the times and survived the quakes. If you are a film buff this is the place for you. They have an incredible selection of films ranging from New released to foreign and classics and their special collection of the 300 best films ever made always provides something interesting to watch.

  • review rating 5  Best video store in Christchurch, as a film student it is one of the only places I have been able to find many of the films I have studied, it is a film lovers dream and the staff are really helpful and knowledgeable.

  • review rating 5  Had a brilliant night at the movies. Wednesday night my friend and I went to see Bad Times at the El Royale. We had the theatre to ourselves. The movie was great, very tense, there was lots of screaming and laughter. We were grateful to have the place to ourselves. Not so good for Alice. A real gem in the city.

  • review rating 5  Great little independent theatre. Alice screens the unconventional films that the large theatres won't. As of writing, Alice was the only theatre in town that was playing Death of Stalin. The Ticket prices are on the high side, but snack prices are reasonable. Alice offers students discounts, which is great if your from the nearby Ara Institute. Alice has two themed theatres with capacity for about 30 people, complete with opening curtains and classic music from various films playing as you wait, which I think are all nice touches. Would recommend.
